Analysis: Bed bugs on board

News »  Published: 26/02/2016 - Filed under: News » British Airways has confirmed that passengers on a recent inbound Boeing 747 flight  from the US found some unwelcome stowaways on board: bed bugs. Cimex lectularius, to give the tiny insects their official name, feed exclusively on blood – usually human – and their bites can lead to large, itchy lumps in some people, although others have almost no reaction at all. Reports had been circulating  on social media in the past few days about passengers spotting the bugs on their flight, although the issue gained traction today when it was reported in the Sun newspaper.  It claimed that a whole row  of seats in economy on the Jumbo had to be vacated and there was no time  to fumigate the… Read More

Restaurant check: Bellanger

Restaurants / bars »  BACKGROUND Corbin and King – the London restaurateurs behind the Wolseley, the Delaunay, Brasserie Zedel and Fischers, as well as luxury Mayfair hotel the Beaumont (reviewed here) – opened Bellanger in Islington in December. Like most of the pair’s other restaurants, it’s an all-day grand café – in this case inspired by the traditional Alsatian brasseries of Paris. THE VENUE The 195-cover venue occupies the former home of Browns restaurant on Islington Green. It also has a 24-seat terrace. Stepping in one biting winter evening, we were immediately hit by the warm, refined atmosphere familiar to any fan of Corbin and King’s establishments. Still, Bellanger has more of a neighbourhood feel than the others in the group, as you might expect from its Islington location. The… Read More

We select ten interesting hotels which, if all goes well, should open their doors this year or next. From the same owner as the Courthouse Hotel at Carnaby Street comes the Old Street Courthouse Hotel in Shoreditch. Renovating the former magistrates court and adding a new wing, the hotel will have 128 rooms, a bar that incorporates some of the former jail cells, conference… Read More

News »  Published: 30/01/2016 - Filed under: News » The fire that broke out at Hotel Ritz Paris earlier this month (see news January 19) will delay its much anticipated reopening until June this year. While the change in opening date from mid-March will give the hotel a few extra months to work on the damage caused by the fire, rooms at the back of the hotel facing rue Cambon will remain closed for longer.   Reservations are currently accepted from June 1, with an Executive Room starting at €1,200 (£914) a night, but an exact date will be confirmed in the next few weeks. Hotel check: Alila Diwa Goa

India »  Published: 31/01/2016 - Filed under: News » Tried & Tested » Hotels » Tried & Tested » Tried & Tested » Hotels » India » WHAT'S IT LIKE? Opened in 2009 this is a lovely, design-led property, very different from other five-star resorts along the Goa coast, and with a clear focus on both the corporate meetings market as well as leisure, without losing the sense of being a retreat. It is on the edge of a village with views out across paddy fields, and almost fits into the landscape with its walls of the local red laterite stone, pitched roofs, wide verandahs and corridors of teak. In the evening the brass lanterns and moon lanterns create a magical atmosphere. WHERE IS IT? In Majorda, about 25 minutes… Read More
