Qantas opens first class lounge at LAX

The facility can accommodate more than 200 people and is three-times the size of the Australian airline's previous first class lounge at LAX. It joins the Qantas-managed Los Angeles Business Lounge, which opened in June and is jointly owned by Qantas, BA and Cathay Pacific (see news, June 18). Qantas First Lounge is based on the carrier's first class lounges in Sydney and Melbourne and was designed by Marc Newson. It contains a 74-seat restaurant and bar with an open-style kitchen, two private work suites and seven showers with Aurora Spa ASPAR products. Skyteam completes Sky Priority roll-out

The facility provides eligible customers with dedicated check-in desks, priority boarding and baggage collection, and priority at transfer and ticket desks. It is available to Elite Plus, first and business class passengers. Skyteam is now working with 60 airports to introduce fast-track lanes at security and immigration. Currently, 39 of these airports have implemented the "Security Fast Track" service, while "Immigration Fast Track Service" has been brought in at 21 airports. Regus opens first ‘workpods’ at Gatwick

The two workpods are located airside and offer business travellers a private workspace with wifi, a desk and seat, plug sockets and mobile device chargers, a computer screen and a telephone to make calls within the UK. Each facility costs £10 plus VAT (£12) per half hour. Travellers can use their credit card to book the workpod on the spot, providing it is not in use, or they can book online in advance. Measuring 400 sqm, the facility can accommodate up to 105 guests and has been designed to reflect the style of BA's flagship London Heathrow T5 Galleries lounge. The Schiphol lounge has runway views and features a deli area for light dining and a bar with complimentary soft drinks, wines and spirits. Power points are available at most seats and guests can print wirelessly to a printer. Aer Lingus rejects IAG takeover bid

IAG today confirmed it had made an offer to the Irish airline, but that this has been turned down. Earlier, the Financial Times reported that an offer would be made before Christmas. A deal would require the approval of Ryanair, which owns a 29.8 per cent stake in Aer Lingus, the Irish government, which has a 25 per cent stake, and the European Commission. Aer Lingus is the third largest airline at London Heathrow, so the attraction for IAG would be to own its slots at the airport, which is BA's main base. Etihad unveils new A380 and B787-9 aircraft

The Gulf airline will operate a three-times daily A380 service to Heathrow by the end of next year. Airbus plans to develop stretched A380

Bregier made the pledge in order to quash reports that Airbus may halt production of the A380 in 2018 due to poor sales, following comments made by finance director Harald Wilhelm (see news, December 11). A "technical problem" at Swanwick air traffic control centre in Hampshire caused many flights to be grounded. Nats, the main air navigation service provider in the UK, said the issue has now been resolved and that service will gradually return to normal.
